Partner Spotlight: Northern Powerhouse can be the magnet for inward investment, says Simon Eastwood of Carillion Developments

The Northern Powerhouse is an initiative that holds massive potential and if delivered correctly it can prove to be the magnet for inward investment we believe it can be.

The Northern Powerhouse is an initiative that holds massive potential and if delivered correctly it can prove to be the magnet for inward investment we believe it can be.

Carillion is highly-active across the North of England with a number of significant investments and projects that are enhancing the economic and social prospects of the powerhouse regions.

Airport City Manchester is a prime example of the inward investment that can be attracted to a project that can bring far-reaching economic benefits to an area.

In addition to Airport City Manchester, Carillion is also active in the North West market through its majority shareholding in real estate company, Ask.  As a result of this investment we are delivering a pipeline of projects including the £200m Greengate Embankment project in Salford, the first phase of which has now been completed with 165,000 square feet of offices let to Swinton Insurance a 442-space car park let to Q-Park together with a J. Sainsbury supermarket.

In Manchester we are developing up to 750,000 square feet commercial and residential space at Manchester Central as well as managing the First Street development where Carillion is currently delivering 170,000 square feet of office space for Patrizia and GMPF and in Macclesfield we are embarking on a new leisure based town centre regeneration project.

However, our Northern Powerhouse activity is not restricted to the North West.  In Leeds we are developing the Towers Works site in Holbeck Urban Village to provide apartments and offices within a short walk of the new south entrance to Leeds station.

And, in the North East, we are actively delivering a number of prestigious regeneration projects including the transformation of the 5.3 acre former Passport Office site in Durham City into a mixed-use development that will feature high quality, apartments, premium bars and restaurants and a boutique cinema.

We are proud to be at the forefront of developments across the Northern Powerhouse and believe our confidence in the regions should act as a catalyst for further investment, which will strengthen the North’s position in the UK and global economies.
